What to Expect

  • — Kybella Pre Treatment Health Screen—

    Health and safety is Dr. Heather’s priority. To help avoid potential complications, please review our pre and post treatment considerations.

    You are not eligible for treatment with filler if you are pregnant, nursing, experiencing an infection, or having an autoimmune condition flare-up.

    Please notify us if you are traveling within 48 hours of your appointment.

    **Please get clearance from your physician if you have a history of autoimmune, neurological, or psychological disorders.

    — Pre Treatment Instructions—

    As with any medical grade aesthetic treatment, bruising can happen. Here are some suggestions to help minimize bruising risk:

    Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! When you are drinking enough water, your skin is more likely to have proper hydration levels and this supports wound healing. You want to get about 11 cups of water in a day to maintain proper hydration.

    Take Arnica 30 C homeopathic tablets 3 pellets, 3 times a day, for 3 days before and after treatment. The evidence does not consistently show that homeopathic arnica is effective, however there are studies showing that it works. Given that arnica is readily available, inexpensive, and safe, it is reasonable to initiate prior-to and after treatment for those who bruise easily or are concerned about bruising.

    Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment. Alcohol makes it harder for the blood to clot which increases bruising risk.

    Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, and gingko for about one week prior to your treatment. These medications increase bleeding and bruising.

    Please inform us of any medical history changes, difficulty with swallowing, infections, allergies, neck pathologies, lymph node swelling, thyroid enlargement, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Swelling is expected! This is the body’s inflammatory response and exactly what we are looking for. This means we expect and want to see swelling that lasts typically three to ten days.

    The swelling is normal and will come down.

    Plan your procedure around social downtime to account for swelling and potential bruising.

    Ice will help manage mild pain associated with treatment.

    You may also experience bruising and numbness. The numbness may last for several weeks.

    The treated area may feel firm to the touch. This is normal as your body works to rid the fat cells through its natural inflammatory process.

  • Expect swelling, redness, pain, and hardness immediately after treatment with Kybella. You may experience bruising, tenderness and numbness as well. This is normal and will gradually improve over the next couple of weeks to months.

    The inflammation is expected and part of the process, therefore please do not take anti inflammatory medication for 3-5 days after treatment.

    Do not touch, massage, or apply pressure to the treatment area.

    Keep your head above your heart for four hours and avoid the sauna for 24 hours.

    Limit strenuous activity for 24 hours after treatment.

    To help reduce swelling, you can sleep with your head slightly elevated following the procedure.

    Avoid skincare products to the treatment area for 24 hours.

    Avoid irritating products like retinols and acids to the treatment area for one week following the procedure.

    If you experience bruising apply light ice to the area or take Bromelain 200mg to speed up healing.

    When to contact us:

    Difficulty with breathing or swallowing.

    Intense pain in the treated area.

    Swelling that does not improve.

    Change in color or temperature to the skin.

Aftercare

  • The ideal candidate for our Portland Kybella injections are those over 18 years old with moderate fat under the chin.

  • You are not a good candidate for Portland Kybella injections if you are pregnant or nursing, have excessive skin laxity, have a medical condition or infection near the treatment area, or have a history with trouble swallowing.

  • Multiple treatments are often required for optimal results with Kybella in Portland Oregon. Dr. Heather Friedman will customize a plan based on your needs and goals. Many patients will notice results after two to four Kybella injection treatments spaced about 12 weeks apart.

    For each treatment, you will receive injections of Kybella into the treatment area. The injections take about 30 minutes to perform. The number of injections required depend on the amount of fat present.

    You should expect a lot of downtime with this procedure. You can be swollen for weeks with taking 3-4 months to show.

  • You can expect some discomfort, swelling, bruising, or numbness in the treatment area. For most patients, the majority of the swelling subsides after about one month. Be prepared for swelling and downtime with this procedure. Results take 3-4 months to show themselves.

  • Over the course of a few days following a treatment session, fat cells rupture, allowing the fat to be gradually absorbed by the body. Results begin to appear in about 8 weeks after the procedure and improve with each treatment session.

  • Many patients see results after two to four treatment sessions with Kybella injections.

  • Once the fat cells are destroyed they are gone for good and can no longer accumulate fate. When your Kybella goals are reached no further treatments should be required provided your overall body weight remains consistent.
